Tenth day out May 10 th
England - Capel Y Ffin to Exeter (s/w UK) 12 c
07.35 am We are all very happy to be up early for breakfast as we have 180 miles to drive today plus sightseeing along the way. This YHA at Capel Y Ffin has atmosphere with history totally build in plus very clean, comforty and yummy meals cooked by the manager.
07.37am One last look around the outside buildings before heading off down the hill.
08.38 am Heading west over the "Black Moutains" along these narrow roadways with no fences but cattle grids which would be interesting to travel in winter (notice no trees).
08.42 You could drive along here admiring these endless views with much pleasure.
08.47 Have to give way to sheep, goats and horses up here in the welsh hills. Soon back on laneways where I think I liked the hills where you could see round the corners for cars.
08.54 am Yes there isn't a lot of clearance here and we all did like these wider wooded roads.
10.53 How do you get back to your house when you are drunk aye, from here each house looks the same but I bet nearly each house has its own mum.
11.25 There are massive canola crops everywhere along the way. We are soon in olde Bath and I think this is a university campus? (impressive buildings everywhere in Bath)
13.41 Castles and churches sticking out at you from all sides down the road plus more of these appealing wooded roads.
13.56 Now down the steep, narrow "Cheddar Gorges" to the plains below with a few places down to a single lane through the steep rock faces.
14.24 Still further down Cheddar Gorges and the goats are not worried about the cars at all and keep grazing happyly on the lush grass.
15.57 Soon in Exeter down south and find our YHA, booked in and looking out the back window across the fields but we are in the middle of a big city.
Comments:
Philip: We travelled through picture postcard Welsh hills to Bath, then breath taking Cheddar Gorges with a motorway sprint to Exeter. Enjoying the driving through the countryside, Wales is amazing and I haven't crashed the car yet.
Donna: The next day we went to Exeter it took ages and we really noticed England has a huge amount of roundabouts. We tried to see the Bath ruins but we couldn’t find it at all and apparently it was very big site but the signs are hard to follow, anyway it cost too much. The Cheddar Gorge was a beautiful drive down very high cliffs.
Rebecca: Today we travelled to Exeter south of Bath. On the way we went through the Cheddar Gorges which were very high and filled with goats.
